With 2015 quickly coming to a close, it’s time to start looking to 2016 and anticipating fun events happening during the coming year — and if you’re a student who lives in or close to Atlanta, Georgia, you’ll want to mark your calendars with these 2016 events.

1. Pancakes and Booze Art Show

This underground art show (Atlanta’s largest) takes place on February 6th, and consists of a traveling exhibition of artists, pancakes, body painting, live music, and more fun activities. The show will be at the Georgia Freight Depot and tickets are $5 at the door. You must be 21 or older to get in but if you are, it looks like it’ll be a fun and yummy night!

2. 6th Annual Suwanee Beer Fest in Suwanee

One of the premier American craft beer events in the South, the Annual Suwanee Beer Fest is an awesome tradition you’ll want to be a part of. The festival will be over St. Patrick’s Day weekend on March 19th in the afternoon at Suwanee Town Center Park.

Over 250 craft beers will be featured at the festival from both local and national breweries, as well as a variety of food and live music. General Admission tickets are $40, and a portion of that goes to charity; the event does sell out so you’ll want to get tickets in advance! Those who purchase a GA ticket will get unlimited tasting of over 250 beers, and a commemorative tasting glass, along with unrestricted access to all areas of the festival.

3. Atlanta Film Festival

The Atlanta Film Festival – one of the largest and longest-running festivals in the country — will be celebrating its 40th year in 2016 and is one of only 24 Academy Awards qualifying festivals in the U.S. The Atlanta festival has welcomed audiences around 25,000 and has received over 3,000 submissions from different genres from all over the world.

The Atlanta Film Festival will take place April 1-10 at various theaters in Atlanta. In recent years, screenings at the festival have included in-person panels with filmmakers, giving the audience and other film enthusiasts and professionals the chance to interact. Past guests at the festival have included Josh Brolin, Eddie Vedder, Pauley Chris Moore, Gary Anthony Williams, Ray McKinnon, Walton Goggins, Margaret Cho, and Pauley Perrette. If you’re a film buff, the Atlanta Film Festival is a 2016 event you won’t want to miss!

4. One12 Courtland

After a hugely popular Battle of the Bands event and a recent stop-by from Atlanta-based rapper KCamp, students at Georgia State are wondering what is happening over at One12 Courtland. The downtown building often referred to as “One12” has built a reputation for being the home to sophisticated nightlife events that draw both local and prominent musicians to a rooftop pool that is surrounded by the skyscrapers of Atlanta’s cityscape.

Future programming includes a DJ battle to see which University, either Georgia State or Georgia Tech, boasts the best DJ in Atlanta. Stay tuned this spring and head to the One12 roofdeck to play a part in the exciting One12 experience.

5. Shaky Knees Music Fest

You’ll definitely want to attend this music fest from May 13-15 in Atlanta, which features tons of indie-folk and soul-rock bands on multiple stages, as well as local food and beer at Centennial Olympic Park & International Plaza.

Early bird tickets will go on sale soon (sometime in December) and you can save by buying your tickets to the 3-day festival ahead. Last year’s lineup included The Strokes, Pixies, Ryan Adams, Halsey, The Avett Brothers, Wilco, Milky Chance, ZZ Ward, TV on the Radio, Mastodon, and more.

6. Laughing Skull Comedy Festival

The 7th annual Laughing Skull Comedy Festival will take place June 7-12th in Atlanta at various comedy clubs, including Laughing Skull Lounge, Atlanta Improv Comedy Club & Dinner Theatre, Terminal West, Eddie’s Attic, and the Hard Rock Cafe. In past years, the comedy festival accepted 72 comedians, but for the 2016 festival, they’ll be accepting 101 comedians.

Tickets are typically $25-$30 but vary by venue, and most clubs only let in those 21 and older. There’s bound to be some hilarious talent in this competitive festival, so you’ll want to keep an eye out for when 2016 tickets go on sale.

So if you’re a student living in or close to Atlanta, be sure to write down these great events happening in 2016 — you won’t want to miss these awesome festivals and shows!
